Cardigan is about Peter Pan aka Matt Healy, she pointed at him at the show he was at during this. The Cardigan they passed back and forth was like Tinkerbell’s thimble symbolizing a kiss, but he was too big to kiss, to unattainable (he was with Halsey, she Joe( and so on ) but he won her heart fully and held on to it for a decade. Peter chasing Wendy, original lyric was Wendy chasing Peter. One day he’s grow up and give her that picket fence he’d promised and leave Never never land and the Lost Boys but he be came the Loss of her Life instead. The White Picket Fence had Five Holes in it not Four and it was a Fence she was being gaslit into believing would happen once she was fresh out the slammer.

"The Tortured Poets Department"

"Down Bad"

So, Taylor got some criticism for reportedly dating Matty due to his previous controversies, including comments about Ice Spice's appearance and even comments about Tay herself. Now, fans think she's alluding to that in this new song.
"They’ll say I'm nuts if I talk about the existence of you," she sings. Maybe she's talking about people criticizing her for dating him?

You know it was real, and you know she does not say "I love you" easily. There's a huge, 10-year-long, up-and-down, off-and-on relationship reflected in these songs.
Misplaced Interpretations
You tried to make them be about Joe, but it was like a puzzle piece that didn't fit, yet you smashed it in there anyway. Maybe if you had a more persistent sense of reality, you would have gone to Karlie Kloss with the lyrics, but even then, there were some things that just didn't quite fit. "If you never shoot, you're never going to know; you're never going to grow"—similar, for sure. Okay, fine. I would read these as her response, in a sense, to me and you together. I think the story needs more pages because I've been in love with her for ages. To add more to their love story: "Why am I still writing pages?"

Is it almost her response? I've tried, don't even like it; she's building on the rhyme. This is another hidden in plain sight thing she loves to do—there's nothing she loves more. "I’ve tried to find another name a thousand times, and the only one that rhymes is Caroline."

February 9, 2023: Healy appears on The Adam Friedland Show, where he’s part of a racist discussion about the rapper Ice Spice. After Healy mentions an attempt to DM Ice Spice, the hosts attempt to guess her heritage and mock the accents of different ethnic groups. Healy laughs at the hosts’ accents on the podcast and encourages them. At another point in the podcast, Friedland mentions a friend walking in on Healy watching “Ghetto Gaggers” porn (which has been criticized as racist and misogynist) after a party. Healy confirms and expands upon the story, saying it was a video of “somebody just getting, like, brutalized.”

April 6, 2023: Swifties' online attacks were not blocked and prevail, Healy episode of The Adam Friedland Show gets removed from Apple and Spotify without comment.

April 8, 2023: Swift and Alwyn have broken up, Entertainment Tonight confirms. A source tells the outlet the couple split weeks before, after six years of dating. “It’s why [Alwyn] hasn’t been spotted at any shows,” the source says.

April 21, 2023: During a concert in Auckland, New Zealand, Healy apologizes to Ice Spice over the podcast. “It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued,” he says. “It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick.” He goes on, “I am genuinely sorry if I upset her, because I fucking love her.”
